Foolproof smoky eyes

Smoky eyes is a hot topic of conversation, and it seems to me that most people would love to wear the look but don't know how to create it without looking like they've got black eyes! So, I thought I'd give you an easy way to do it. These steps can be followed by anyone and everyone out there but the shapes created with the shadows and pencils will differ for each individual eye shape and you will need to make that judgement yourself.

1. Start with a black/brown/grey eyeliner (it must be a soft one) and literally colour in your entire eyelid. You will need to keep opening your eye to check that you are not going over the edges. You shouldn't be able to see the eyeliner when you open your eye, except on your eyelid. Work the eyeliner into the lashes and bring it to just within each corner.

2. Using a clean eyeshadow blending brush, blend the edges of the colour up and outwards so that when you open your eye you begin to see the colour coming into the socket and sitting above the eye itself. Make sure you blend very thoroughly so that the sharp edge of the colour completely disappears. Blend subtly into the inside corner of the eye. You may want to spread the colour evenly all the way around the eye. Or, you may want to blend it into a more rounded shape, bringing it higher up into the centre of the brow bone. The most common look though is blending it upwards (onto the outer brow bone) and outwards (towards the hairline from the outer corner) to elongate the eye.

3. Using the same coloured eyeshadow, blend this on top of the pencil colour and into the socket line to give it staying power and intensify the colour.

4. Using a lighter shade of the colours you have already used, blend this into the eye socket and outside the edges of the darker colour to soften the look.

5. Use the eyeliner pencil to draw a line along the lower lashes (as close to them as possible) Start from the outside corner and work inwards. The further in you go, the more dramatic the eye will look. Use a cotton bud to smudge this so that there are no sharp edges.

6. You can use the lighter coloured eyeshadow over and below the line you have just smudged to soften it if it looks too strong.

7. Use a dark or a white eyeliner inside the bottom rim of the eye and the upper rim of the inside part of the eye (where there are no eyelashes). A dark eyeliner will look more dramatic and a white one will freshen up the look and open up the eye.

8. Use a silver/gold/cream eyeshadow and blend it lightly into the inside corner of the eye, bringing it underneath slightly and blending it across to the dark line under the eye. This will brighten the eye.

9. Apply mascara to top and bottom lashes.

10. Apply a lighter shade of eyeshadow under the brow bone. Sometimes an under eye concealer can be used for this as it acts as a subtle highlighter.

NB. Blending is key!!! Do your eyes before the rest of your face to avoid any spill on your make-up base. And, remember to finish off with nude lips, use blusher on your cheeks and make sure you use under eye concealer - especially if you have dark circles under your eyes. Smoky eyes can highlight these even more!
