In winter, our skins get paler and we can no longer get away with wearing fake tans and bronzing products to brighten our complexions. But, we can wear blusher!
It’s all about flushed cheeks this season. Whether you’re opting for a ‘barely there’ look or a more noticeable flush, applying cheek colour will help you look feminine and fresh. And, can make all the difference when you look in the mirror on a dreary autumn morning.
Choosing the right colour
Will millions of different
shades on offer, this is the trickiest part of choosing the right blusher for
you but it must be got right. Wearing a shade that suits you will instantly brighten
your face. The wrong shade, however, will have the opposite effect.
Firstly, you need to work out if
you suit warm or cool colours. Hold
something white/silver up to one side of your face and something cream/gold up
to the other. A piece of paper or jewellery is ideal. It’s more than likely
that one side of your face will look instantly brighter than the other.
If the white/silver side looks
better, you suit cool shades and should opt for rose/plum toned blushers. If
the cream/gold side looks better, you suit warm shades and should choose peachy/apricot
shades. If they both look the same, you are one of the lucky ones that suits
all shades. You can wear any coloured blusher you like!
Natural-looking shades in
subtle, muted tones are best suited for cheeks, especially in Autumn when
complexions are fair.
Powder, cream or stain?
Powder blusher is ideal for normal, oily and combination skin types as it goes on well and creates a very soft looking diffusion of colour across the cheeks. Powder blusher is the easiest of all three to apply and comes in the widest range of shades.

Cream blusher is great for dry and mature
skins (which often don’t suit powders), immediately bringing the complexion to
life with a very real looking flush. Cream
blusher is fairly easy to apply and comes in an ample range of shades but is
not made by every brand.
Cheek stains can only be worn by people with well moisturized (not dry)
skins. They look very natural and last a
long time on the skin but can be difficult to apply and only come in very
limited shades.
How to apply blusher
Always apply your blusher (whether it be powder, cream or stain) to the
apples of your cheeks blending upwards and along the cheekbones for a fresh
natural look. If you’re not sure where
the apple of your cheek is, look into the mirror and smile. It’s the round part that comes
forward near your nostrils. Avoid going
to close to your nose or temples and make sure you blend well and there are no
visible edges or lines.
When
applying powder blusher, use a
blusher brush to apply to the apples of the cheeks with small circular motions,
gently working the excess upwards and along the cheekbones for a natural
finish.
Always apply powder blushers to
skin prepped with a small amount of powder, otherwise the colour pigments may
fall unevenly on the skin resulting in a blotchy look.
To apply cream blusher, dab a dot on the apple of each cheek
and two smaller dots along your cheekbones. Blend around the apple and upwards
along the cheekbones with your finger tips using small circular motions. If you apply a bit too much, blot carefully
with a tissue and re-blend with your finger tips.
Apply cheek stain in exactly the same way as cream blusher but beware
that stains tend to dry very fast so blend
quickly once applied. And, if you make a
mistake and apply too much, you will need to wash your face and start
again!

- If you have sallow (yellow) toned skin, after applying your blusher, dust the excess around your face to brighten your complexion
- Opt for semi-matte shades for a more natural look
- Throw out freebie brushes and invest in a quality blusher brush instead
- For a sexy look, dab a little shimmery blush on the highest point of your cheekbone nearest your eye
- Match your lip colour to your blusher, it looks fab!
- If you go a bit heavy on the powder blusher, apply a bit of translucent powder over it to soften the colour
