Fantastic facial oils

Whatever your skincare goal, the right facial oil will help you to achieve it. Facial oils are among the best products in the cosmeceutical market today. They should be a staple skincare for everyone who cares about their skin, regardless of skin type.

I first discovered facial oils when training as a Neal's Yard Remedies facialist in London. As students, we practiced routines on each other.

With combination and acne-prone skin, I was more than a little worried when I felt oil on my face during a practice session - although it didn't feel greasy, which was a surprise.

It was the Neal's Yard Remedies Orange Flower Facial Oil (£26 for 30ml  - 100% natural) (I recommend for anyone under 30 years of age), which left my skin looking and feeling amazing for days.

I then discovered that, contrary to popular belief, oils are not just for dry skin. There are over 50 different types of fatty acids in oils, and each oil has its own unique composition.

These range from dry oils (non-greasy oils, good for young, oily and combination skins) to more fatty oils (richer in texture and good for dryer and maturer skins).

"Filled with essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants, [oils] work to strengthen the skin’s protective barrier, prevent free radical damage, and increase elasticity. The chemical constituents of plant essential oils differ among species." Dermatology News

The amazing thing is that there is no water in oils, therefore no nasty preservatives are needed! It's super easy to make fantastic oils with 100% natural ingredients.

Since then oils have been my biggest skincare investment - I use one every night, massaging a small amount into my face and decollete (neck and chest).

When I'm lazy and lapse, I notice my skin deteriorating almost immediately. I notice the same in family and friends too.

My favourite oil right now, recommended for anyone over 30 years old (I'm 41, by the way, with fine-lined, sensitive and blemish-prone skin!), is Green People's Age Defy Plus Cell Enrich Facial Oil (£35 for 30ml). Green People are super ethical - read their story.

It's non-greasy yet ultra-hydrating and leaves my skin looking youthful, dewy and toned.

It also contains my favourite oil, rosehip seed oil, used by native Americans to heal skin issues. A rich source of Vitamin E, C, D, A, and essential fatty acids, it's used a lot for hydration, acne, scar and stretch mark reduction and even healing rosacea.

Just as a side note, if you have any plant-based allergies, be cautious when using fragrant oils and test every oil on their inner forearm before using on your face.

Enjoy x
