Wearing eyeliner can make a huge difference to your look, making your eyes look both bigger and brighter When I’m giving make-up lessons eyeliner is usually the area that most people struggle with. Getting the line straight and ensuring it looks even can be a real challenge. It definitely takes practice but rest assured that with a little time and effort, you will get it right. And, it will be worth it!
Which eyeliner?
I recommend using gel liner, I prefer it to liquid or pencil as it looks soft on the eye and is surprisingly easy to apply. My favourite is Estee Lauder Double Wear Gel Eyeliner in dark brown (Stay Coffee) for its lasting power. Once applied, it won’t move so you don’t have to worry about smudges or streaks. It’s £17.50 and comes with its own easy-to-use angled application brush. If you’re fair skinned, opt for dark brown eyeliner and if you’re darker, opt for black. Of course, for the autumn season, coppers are very on-trend.
How to apply?
Using the angled brush, start by applying the best line you can, two thirds along the upper lash line, starting from the outer eye corners near your temples and working inwards towards your nose. Get as close to the base of your lashes as possible so there is no gap between your line and where your lashes begin.
Draw the line a little thicker at the outer corners and finish near the inner eye corners by tapering the line until it disappears. You will probably find this easier if you stretch your eyelid up from the brow with your fingertip so that there are no creases on the eyelid and you can see exactly where you’re applying your eyeliner.
Don’t worry if the line isn’t perfect, it’s easy to fix. This is the beauty of cotton buds, which I couldn’t be without. You can easily remove unwanted liner with a cotton bud dipped in make-up remover (I recommend Rimmel Gentle Eye Make-up Remover at £2.99) erasing mistakes and ensuring your line is smooth.
This little technique is also great if you want to flick your eyeliner at the outer corners, simply draw your flick and perfect the angle and shape with your cotton buds. And, you can re-apply where needed little by little.
With a bit of practice, you will soon have it down to a fine art. Finish with black or brown mascara.
